ENSURING OF LONGITUDINAL CONNECTIVITY OF JIU RIVER
NEAR THE ISALNITA DAM

Abstract

This issues paper continues the series of research concerns to the longitudinal connectivity of rivers elaborates in the National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management (NIHWM) and is part of a complex study on the ensuring of fish migration upstream the Işalniţa dam (H= 18 m), situated on the Jiu River. The objective of this paper is based on the need to ensure longitudinal connectivity of the inland rivers in order to establish sustainable ways of solving present problems of fish migration generated by dams’ construction.  The goal is to offer solutions to the central or local institutions for the problem issues facing each of these, to restore the longitudinal connectivity of Jiu River near the Işalniţa dam.
The Işalniţa reservoir is located in Southern extremity of Getic Piedmont, at the morphologically contact with Olteniei Plain, and was created as a result of the construction of Işalniţa dam in order to ensure the water supply of the Craiova municipality and of the Işalniţa industrial platform.
The water body “Işalniţa reservoir” has been classified as heavily modified water body, due to the dam’s presence. Also, this accumulation is par of the site of Community Importance (SCI) for the protection of habitats and species ROSCI0045 – Jiu Corridor, which include one of the rarest and most representative relict samples of less altered European meadow, two migratory fish species and a large number of migratory birds, protected at the national and European level.
Thus the need to solve longitudinal connectivity and fish migration problems has led to propose technical frontal solutions to ensure fish migration upstream and downstream the Işalniţa dam.
The proposed technical solutions will contribute to restore longitudinal connectivity of the Jiu River and aquatic habitats and default to restore the natural ecosystems and to improve water quality. In this way, restoration of longitudinal connectivity of Jiu River, in the area of the Işalniţa dam, would provide a habitats reconnection on the reach located between the confluence of Jiu River and Turceni dam, and creating optimal conditions for the fish migration and development of aquatic fauna.

Keywords: longitudinal connectivity, fish migration, dams, water course
