NATURAL AND POST MINING HAZARDS IN VISEU BASIN
Abstract: The Vişeu basin is carved in crystalline schists, andesite rocks and sedimentary rocks (formed in the superior Cretaceous, the inferior Oligocene and Miocene, Pliocene and Quaternar). The deluvial blanket covering the medium, mild slopes is in an unstable balance. On the larger valleys, when the rainfalls are heavy chiefly when they occur at the same time with snow melting) floods occur (e.g. in July 2008) that destroy households, roads, bridges, etc. The high energy of the relief confers this river network a remarkable erosive potential. The climatic conditions are the ones typical of the average and. high mountain level, with annual average temperatures below 2-3oC and annual precipitation quantities of de 900-1200 mm. The abundant precipitation falls cause floods and generate the present processes (slides, collapses, etc.). Besides the natural hazards, a special problem is generated by the presence of the Colbu, Borşa and Novăţ catch pit that can pollute the ground and the underground waters, as well as the soil and the vegetation. When the research field of mapping, sampling and conducting tests of heavy metals, was attended by experts and researchers at the Institute of Geography of the Romanian Academy, Geoproiect Baia Mare, ICIA Cluj-Napoca, University of North Baia Mare, Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences, University of Wales, Aberystwyth Ceredigion (United Kingdom).
Keywords: natural hazards, floods, heavy metals pollution.
